The sole purpose of The Ohio Outback® Initiative is to create economic development across our entire region while we maintain our rural, Appalachian, atmosphere. The driving force that caused The Ohio Outback® Initiative to begin was the acceptance of the reality that none of our communities, organizations, groups, or individuals have the ability to generate a sustainable critical mass of disposable income visitors large enough to significantly and positively impact the economic status of our individual communities.
The Ohio Outback® volunteers are region-wide citizens acting upon their personal civic responsibility by working to improve our region's economic conditions. The volunteers do not represent government, have no formal organizational structure, no designated leader, and are not bound by bureaucracy. The Ohio Outback® is neither a for-profit nor a not-for-profit organization. Volunteers recommend that funding requests (grants, etc.) be processed through the appropriate government sub-division. Intentionally, The Ohio Outback® region is not defined geographically. Volunteers encourage folks outside our region to market our Appalachian hospitality, natural, historical, cultural and artistic resources to their many publics.
Many great localized events and activities occur throughout our region. Understanding that none can survive as an island unto themselves is why The Ohio Outback® Initiative has caught fire. Therefore, by definition:
The Ohio Outback® is our region's DESTINATION where thoughtful, committed people maintain group identities, political structures, and financial controls, as grassroots organizations work together to maintain our rural atmosphere while practicing wise use principles to create SUSTAINABLE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT.
The Ohio Outback® is formally recognized by organizations as the Name, Specific Regional Identity, a catalyst for forming Creative Partnerships, and a Marketing Tool, for our entire Appalachian region and affiliated counties. This grassroots approach is entirely different than a "government designation". Citizens repeatedly express their opinion that this is a "breath of fresh air". Volunteers are securing formal Let's Market Our Entire Region Together Effort resolutions for the purpose of effectively documenting and demonstrating community and government support for The Ohio Outback® Initiative. The entire package of resolutions is available to ANYONE upon request for use as their communities and organizations pursue sustainable economic development assistance -- whether that be financial, technical or individual volunteer support for their projects.
